Some holidays are especially important because they are associated with Assam’s culture, national celebrations and religious festivals.
1. Magh Bihu
Magh Bihu is one of Assam’s major harvest festivals. The official holiday list includes 14 and 15 January 2026 for Magh Bihu and Tusu Puja.
2. Republic Day
Republic Day falls on 26 January 2026, a Monday. It commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India and is observed across the country.
3. Bohag Bihu
Bohag Bihu marks the Assamese New Year and the beginning of the agricultural season. The official Assam government holiday list includes 14, 15 and 16 April 2026.
4. Independence Day
Independence Day falls on 15 August 2026, a Saturday. Government institutions commonly organise flag-hoisting ceremonies and other commemorative activities, subject to applicable instructions.

Some of the listed restricted holidays include:

Special note about Ali-Aye-Ligang: The original notification provides a full holiday for 18 February 2026 in 11 specified districts, including Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur, while it is a restricted holiday in other districts. The notification and any subsequent government orders should be checked for the applicable arrangements.
Are Schools and Colleges Closed on All Assam Government Holidays?
Not necessarily. The official notification states that the listed holidays do not automatically apply to educational institutions, including medical and engineering colleges, unless those institutions adopt the list.
Schools, colleges and universities may follow their own academic calendars or separate instructions issued by the relevant education authorities.
Students and parents should therefore check the holiday notice issued by their school, college or university before assuming that an institution will remain closed on a particular date.
Do Banks Follow the Assam Government Holiday List?
Bank holidays may differ from the general state government holiday list. Banks follow the applicable banking holiday notifications, and their schedules can also depend on the type of transaction and the location.
For example, the official state notification identifies 1 April 2026 as the annual closing day for bank accounts, when nationalised banks will have no public transactions. It also specifies second and fourth Saturdays as holidays for the relevant government offices, with separate provisions for other Saturdays.
Before visiting a bank, check the bank’s official holiday notice or contact the local branch.
